Our family dog, Gizmo, passed away this weekend. His quirky, lively and soulful personality captured everyone’s heart.
This fall he seemed to be particularly attuned to the season. Standing motionless sniffing the air, gently caressed by falling leaves, watching, instead of chasing deer. He seemed utterly present to nature. He seemed in touch with something that I couldn’t see. Did Gizmo know that his time on earth was drawing to a close? I will never know, but I will never forget his stillness. His just being; just listening; just smelling; just being touched by the wind. At times, I tried to hurry him back inside. He just stood his ground. This moment wasn’t to be rushed or missed.
I feel his presence and his absence everywhere. I expected that. It is the memory above that surprises me and brings on so many tears. A last gift from this sweet little dog:
The world is always changing, but now is a time to be still. Linger awhile. Pay attention. This moment is enough.
