Beyond Burnout
THRIVE AND LEAD FROM WITHIN
In these times of uncertainty and upheaval in healthcare, where physician burnout is at an all time high, it is imperative that physicians optimize the skills that keep them in the driver’s seat of their wellbeing and career. Frequently, dedicated physicians respond to an overburdened system by abandoning self-care and pushing themselves harder and harder to achieve goals that appear ever more elusive. This behavior is a recipe for burnout and unfulfilled career potential. This workshop not only builds the inner strengths that counteract burnout by building resilience, engagement and fulfillment, but are also essential ingredients for self-leadership and career development. It is a highly experiential opportunity to put together a set of tools that have a practical application on a daily basis.
As well as practicing mindfulness and emotional intelligence exercises, participants will work with tools that are used in physician career and leadership development coaching.
Do Mindfulness and Emotional Intelligence make a Difference?
Mindfulness is an opportunity to come off automatic pilot; be present for each moment; and cultivate greater focus, clarity and balance. By taking a moment to pause and open the space in our thinking to once again see the big picture, we create the opportunity to deliberately choose and take control of how we go forward on a moment to moment basis. Mindfulness builds greater self- awareness, which is a fundamental aspect of emotional intelligence. Self-awareness allows us to develop greater understanding of how our emotions impact our well-being. The greater mastery that we have over our emotions, the greater our ability to listen to, understand and effectively communicate with others in the workplace. If we no longer feel locked into our emotions and constrained by tunnel vision, it is possible to cultivate more open, flexible and creative ways of thinking that can lead to a more inspirational and compassionate way of working with and leading others.

“Beyond Burnout”
THRIVE AND LEAD FROM WITHIN
The program is divided into six skill building modules. Each module is usually one hour long and is structured as follows:
- Discussion of the topic
- Experiential exercises

- Action Steps
Core Concepts:
- Practice Mindfulness and Compassion
- Cultivate Joy and Connection
- Expand Emotional Intelligence
- Create Effective Communication
- Promote Perspective and Creativity
- Nurture Meaning and Purpose
MINDFULNESS AND COMPASSION
Mindfulness restores focus, clarity and attention to the moment. It interrupts the stress of ruminating about the past and worrying about the future. It builds calm and equanimity in the midst of challenge. By opening to non-judgment, compassion, beginning with self, can be brought into being and intentionally practiced.
“Breathing in, I calm body and mind. Breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in the present moment I know this is the only moment.” Thich Nhat Hanh
JOY AND CONNECTION
The default mechanism of the brain is towards the negative, known as the negativity bias. Dr. Rick Hanson, author of Hardwiring Happiness, describes it in the following words: “Our minds are like Velcro for negative experiences, and Teflon for the positive ones.” Cultivating a mindset of curiosity, positive thinking, and compassion helps physicians maintain well being; stay connected to new possibilities and opportunities; and create supportive, grounding networks even in the midst of challenge.
“I want you to be everything that’s you, deep at the center of your being.” Confucius
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Cultivating awareness of emotions; recognizing emotional triggers and understanding how they are experienced on a deep, physiological level is the first critical step in developing the capacity to reset the emotional thermostat and build emotional intelligence. This sets the stage for developing greater insight and choice in how we manage ourselves and consequently how we interact with others.
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Victor Frankl
COMMUNICATION
Mindful attention and learning how to fully listen to others is not only foundational to good communication, it leads to greater satisfaction and engagement in work. Build the skills that not only enable you to become a powerful listener, but that give you the confidence and effectiveness to navigate and manage challenging interactions.
“When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” Ernest Hemingway
PERSPECTIVE AND CREATIVITY
Flexibility and creativity are needed to thrive in the changing world of medicine today. Curiosity and openness greatly enhance the ability to see the big picture and offer fresh perspectives and ideas that may inspire and positively influence others.
“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” John Quincy Adams
MEANING AND PURPOSE
Lack of engagement impacts physician happiness, job satisfaction and ultimately performance. Identifying inner motivations, core values, strengths and goals helps physicians stay connected to and implement intentions that are aligned with their most fulfilling aspirations.
“The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.”
Eleanor Roosevelt
